A Cleaner Solution for Critical Electrical Equipment
Contamination is one of the leading causes of electrical switchgear failure. Carbon deposits, dust, oil residue, and moisture accumulate inside panels and substations over time — degrading insulation, reducing clearance distances, and creating the conditions for partial discharge, tracking, and unplanned flashover events.
There is no better process available for the removal of carbon contamination and the prevention of partial discharge and tracking than dry ice cleaning. It is the only cleaning technology that is simultaneously non-abrasive, non-conductive, residue-free, moisture-free, and safe for use on live electrical equipment.

The Science Behind Dry Ice Cleaning
Dry ice cleaning — also known as CO₂ blasting — uses solid Carbon Dioxide pellets at -78.5°C, accelerated in a pressurised air jet stream at the speed of sound, to impact the surface requiring cleaning. The pellets are 3mm in diameter, inert, non-combustible, non-flammable, non-conductive, odourless, non-toxic, and produced from recycled CO₂ — a by-product of existing hydrocarbon and ammonia production processes.
On contact with the contaminated surface, three simultaneous scientific principles act together:
1. Kinetic Effect
The impact of the dry ice pellets creates a powerful flushing action, using kinetic energy to dislodge and displace contamination from the substrate. On impact the pellets sublimate immediately — leaving nothing behind.
2. Thermal Effect
At -78.5°C, the dry ice pellets cause the contamination layer to cool dramatically on contact, causing it to shrink, contract, and lose adhesion from the surface. In some cases, surface temperatures fall below the freeze point of the impurity itself — breaking the bond completely.
3. Sublimation Effect
When the dry ice particles strike the surface, they instantly convert from solid to gas — increasing in volume approximately 800 times. This sudden volumetric expansion forces brittle fragments of contamination away from the surface. The result is thorough cleaning with zero residue, zero moisture, and zero secondary contamination. No other cleaning technology can replicate this process.
Environmental note: The CO₂ used in dry ice cleaning is a recycled waste product from existing industrial processes. It does not add any additional CO₂ emissions to the atmosphere. The process is 100% carbon neutral and fully environmentally responsible.

The Only 10-Stage Air Filtration System for Dry Ice Cleaning in the World
The quality of the compressed air used in dry ice cleaning is critical — contaminated or moisture-laden air introduces new problems to the surface being cleaned. MSD developed the only 10-stage air quality treatment system for dry ice cleaning operations in existence. Our Kaeser compressor system — a 12 Bar, 324 cfm, 9.2m³/min unit — processes inlet air through ten stages of filtration and separation, producing laboratory-quality output air that is 99.75% dry, 100% clean (zero oil content), and 99.95% sterile (no bacteria). Hose lengths of up to 200 metres allow the compressor to be stationed entirely outside the working area, keeping the substation environment clean throughout the operation.
A Fully Equipped Mobile Operation
MSD’s system is built to address every possible site requirement. Our mobile equipment includes a portable diesel generator (5kW, silent/soundproof) for sites without accessible power, an industrial wet and dry vacuum cleaner with 0.3-micron HEPA filtration at 9,720 litres per hour, and a forced air ventilation system capable of achieving a complete fresh air change 318 times per hour in a standard 120m³ room. Carbon dust and air pollution generated during cleaning is continuously ventilated and vacuumed throughout the process.
A Multi-Stage Cleaning Process
MSD applies a structured, multi-stage cleaning approach to every job — not simply a single blast-and-go operation:
- Stage 1 — Initial site cleaning: Industrial high-pressure HEPA filter wet and dry vacuuming
- Stage 2 — Equipment pre-cleaning: Degreasing with industrial or food-grade application as required
- Stage 3 — Main cleaning operation: Dry ice cleaning of plant, equipment, and all targeted surfaces
- Stage 4 — Post-clean: Final wipe down, vacuuming, and floor mopping

Level 4 Advanced Technology
MSD’s compressed air system is classified as a Level 4 advanced contractor system — the highest level available. Compared to legacy Level 1–3 systems used by most operators, our Level 4 system delivers the highest air volume in the industry, the highest working pressure at distance (up to 600m hose length with no significant pressure loss via a triple hose configuration), the lowest dry ice consumption, and laboratory-grade clean air quality — all at a lower contract cost impact than older technology systems.

All MSD dry ice cleaning technicians are trained, skilled, and certified.
